The Four Foundational Services of AWS

At a high level, the AWS business solutions can be broken out into four foundational services: Savings, Security, Compliance and DRaaS Development Operations.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers an impressive suite of IT services and business solutions. Outsourcing your organization’s IT functions to AWS gives you the benefit of flexibility and scalability to better compete in today’s economy.

At a high level, the AWS business solutions can be broken out into four foundational services: Savings, Security, Compliance and DRaaS Development Operations.

Savings

The first foundational service AWS offers is helping organizations reduce IT infrastructure costs.

Migrating your IT functions to AWS can save you the capital expenditure of purchasing and upgrading hardware on site. It also reduces your need for additional staff to manage and maintain the equipment.

AWS can also help optimize your costs through a variety of tools like AWS Config, CloudWatch, AWS OpsWorks, Auto Scaling, and AWS CloudFormation that monitor your account to make sure your resources are being used efficiently. And as an AWS Premier partner, InterVision can help you make the most of your AWS investment.

Security

The second foundational service AWS offers is security. Protecting data against cyber-attacks is a major concern for every business. Cybersecurity is an ongoing process of evaluation, preparation, and response. Cybercriminals are constantly developing new ways to circumvent security protocols to gain access into your business network and data. Whether extorting money through ransomware attacks or stealing customer data to sell on the black market, cybercrime is very lucrative, so cybercriminals are highly motivated and creative.

Many businesses lack the resources to maintain their own security measures in-house. It is often more cost effective to utilize AWS who has the budget and expertise to stay on the cutting edge of data security.

The AWS Security Hub reviews security data from a wide range of AWS services, like Amazon GuardDuty, Amazon Inspector, Amazon Macie, AWS Firewall Manager, AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Access Analyzer, and AWS Systems Manager Patch Manager. Data from each service feed into the AWS Security Finding Format (ASFF), so clients can review it in a standardized format and respond by setting up alerts, automating remediation, and exporting specific the findings to third‑party incident management systems.

Compliance

A third foundational service of AWS is regulatory compliance. Governmental regulations are constantly evolving, and it can be a significant drain of time and resources for companies to stay abreast of and maintain compliance with all of them.

The AWS Compliance Center provides a venue for clients to research cloud-related regulations from over 50 countries across various industries. AWS continuously updates this information as regulations evolve. You can search by country to view specific regulations related to cloud services.

DRaaS Development Operations

The fourth foundational service of AWS is disaster recovery. A disaster recovery solution typically involves two key factors: the amount of data lost and the length of downtime.

The Recovery Point Objective (RPO) measures the amount of data lost going back in time from the disruptive event. Some industries like healthcare or financial services have a very low tolerance for any lost transactions, while others in less dynamic environments, may be satisfied with an option that secures a longer RPO.

The Recovery Time Objective (RTO) measures the time it takes to restore servers back to their pre-disaster state so the organization can resume normal operations. Again, this will vary based on the industry, the nature of the event, and any investigations that may ensue.

AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (AWS DRS) minimizes downtime and data loss with fast, reliable recovery of on-premises and cloud-based applications using affordable storage, minimal compute, and point-in-time recovery.

As an AWS APN Premier Consulting Partner, InterVision offers a Disaster Recover as a Service (DRaaS) solution targeted to AWS.
